Our Process
Product development is a multi-step process that can be complicated without the right help.
Steps for making a product
1
An idea: This takes as much time as you need. What do you want to offer the market that is currently not there? How do you want to differentiate yourself from similar products?
2
Research and base formulation: This takes us about a week. We take your idea(s) and requirements, conduct the research we need to make it a well-thought-out, successful formulation, and draft the formulation. We then share this draft with you for your feedback and approval.
3
Sourcing ingredients: We work with over 200 ingredient vendors to find the right ingredients for your project requirements. Samples are shipped to our lab (or yours) in preparation to begin R&D sample work. We already have a large selection of ingredient samples, but there are always some we still need to bring in. Between finding all of the right ingredients, contacting the vendors, and getting them shipped here, it usually takes 2-6 weeks. This timeframe depends on the number of ingredients we need to find, how easy they are to find, how quickly vendors respond to communication, how long it takes for vendors to send the samples, and where the samples are coming from.
4
Labwork starts: Once all ingredients arrive, labwork can begin. We evaluate the ingredients and start mixing them according to the draft formulation. We look for potential issues and identify possible solutions. We work to improve the flavor, texture, and appearance of the base formula to get something that your customers will love. Initial lab work can take 1-3 weeks, depending on the project’s complexity.
5
Samples ship to you: Once we are happy with the formulation or need feedback on its current progress, we will ship samples to your door for evaluation.
6
Lab work continues, and the next round of samples ships to you: We can go back and forth, making as many rounds of samples as you would like to get your product to where it needs to be. The speed of this process typically depends on how quickly you can share your feedback and whether we need to bring in additional ingredient samples.
7
Creating an RFQ and getting quotes: The final step before obtaining a quote is to prepare a Request for Quote document. This step pulls together all details to ensure each manufacturer quotes the same product with the same specifications. and includes the same items. This document can then be sent to potentially suitable manufacturers to determine whether they are interested in making your product and to request quotes.
8
Deciding on a manufacturer and submitting a PO. This step is a crucial step to take your time on. Make sure to consider all quotes and do your due diligence on the manufacturers to make the best decision for your company and product. Get a quality agreement and other contracts in place before sending in your purchase order.
Is this everything that you need to know to get your product made? No! Getting any product to market is a highly detail-oriented process, with many factors to consider.
